We Broke a Guinness World Record!!
Billy Pinckney with Eve Schaenen, Director of the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center on September 21, 2025.
This past Sunday, the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center made history by breaking the Guinness World Record for the Largest Game of Catch.
As a member of the Centennial Committee, I had the privilege of helping plan this incredible event for over a year. The Museum assembled a diverse group of professionals from across the New York metropolitan area, each bringing unique expertise in the sports industry, to take on the challenge of creating a Guinness World Record–breaking celebration of Yogi Berra’s 100th birthday.
The result? Something truly extraordinary. More than 2,000 participants came together to have a catch, shattering the previous record and honoring Yogi’s legacy in the most fitting way possible - through baseball’s most timeless and unifying act.
What struck me most was the people. Young and old, families and friends, those who had personal memories of Yogi, and others who were born after his passing - all gathered on the same field, gloves in hand, to share in this experience. It was a living example of the values Yogi cherished: teamwork, community, and joy in the simple things.
The day was more than just about breaking a record - it was about celebrating Yogi’s life, his impact on baseball, and the way his legacy continues to bring people together. Former Major Leaguers - and Yogi’s longtime friends - Willie Randolph and Ron Guidry joined the celebration, lending their support to the historic event.
To see thousands of people from all walks of life smiling, laughing, and tossing a ball back and forth was nothing short of inspiring.
I always thought that record would stand until it was broken.
