Curiosity, Dreams, and Childlike Energy: What a School Visit in PA Taught Me

Billy Pinckney speaking to Hereford Elementary School of Pennsylvania in 2025.
I recently had the chance to visit a school in Pennsylvania for an author visit, and it was one of those experiences that leaves a lasting impression on your heart. Walking into that building, I was there to speak to the students—to inspire them, to encourage them, to share a bit of my journey as a writer. But as it so often happens, I left feeling just as inspired by them.
My goal that day was simple but meaningful: to remind those young minds of the power of curiosity and the importance of protecting their dreams. In a world that sometimes seems eager to mold us into something more “realistic” or “practical,” I wanted them to hear something different. I wanted them to know it’s necessary—to stay curious. To ask questions.
And just as importantly, I wanted them to know that their dreams are worth fighting for. It’s easy to chase a dream when things are going well, but the real test comes in the difficult moments—the setbacks, the rejections, the doubts. Dreams, however, can absolutely be lived out if you’re willing to keep going. To keep believing. To keep pushing forward even when it’s hard.
There was a spark in the room—raw enthusiasm, genuine curiosity, and a contagious kind of excitement that so many adults seem to lose over time. It made me reflect on how rare that kind of energy becomes as we grow older.
Somewhere along the way, life tries to quiet that inner fire. Responsibilities pile on, the pressures of life increase, and suddenly, the spark begins to dim. But I truly believe that the people who end up living out their dreams—whatever those dreams may be—are the ones who refuse to let the world dull that light. They protect their energy and they carry that same childlike joy with them into adulthood.
You can see it in the best athletes, too. The ones who stand out aren't just technically skilled—they have an energy that's electric. It’s in their love for the game, their passion, their unshakable drive. That kind of energy is contagious. It keeps their spirits high, fuels their performance, and allows them to find joy in the process, not just the outcome.
How can we bring more of that energy into our daily lives? How can we, as adults, learn to be a little more like children again?
Maybe it starts with giving ourselves permission to be curious again.
The energy I felt in that school wasn’t just inspiring—it was a reminder. A reminder that we all have access to that spark, even if it’s buried under years of “shoulds” and “supposed tos.” It’s still there. We just have to make the choice to tap into it.
So the next time you feel your energy slipping, or your dream drifting out of reach—think back to the fearless curiosity of a child. Think about the joy, the wonder, the spark. And ask yourself: how can I bring a little more of that into my life today?
Surround yourself with people who talk about visions and ideas, not other people.
