Be a Light in a World of Empty Promises

In a world where so many people talk without action, be a light.

This phrase has been heavy on my heart lately…not because I’ve got it all figured out, but because I’ve had to remind myself of it time and time again.

Throughout my young career in sports media, I’ve been incredibly blessed to meet some amazing people. From mentors and industry veterans to peers who push me to be better, I’m so grateful for the relationships I’ve built. These are the people who give you honest feedback, cheer you on without expectation, and show you what integrity looks like.

But recently, I’ve also been confronted with something that’s far too common in our world: empty promises.

Several times this year, I’ve had opportunities presented to me. Some that seemed like they could be game-changing. But when it came time to execute, those doors never opened. The energy disappeared. The communication stopped. What started with enthusiasm ended in silence.

I want to be clear: this isn’t a complaint. It’s not bitterness. It’s a reality I think more people, especially young professionals, need to hear. Because when you’re just getting started in your career, it’s easy to think you’re doing something wrong when things fall through. But the truth is, not everyone operates with the same level of professionalism or character.

And unfortunately, in many creative and competitive industries, talking a big game without follow-through has become normal. That doesn’t mean you should lower your standards. In fact, it’s all the more reason to raise them.

In everything I do, I strive to be a person who honors my word. Whether it’s showing up on time, delivering what I promised, or having the uncomfortable conversation when something can’t move forward, I believe that’s how trust is built.

When I encounter people who don’t operate that way, I still choose professionalism. I still lead with faith. I still keep my energy aligned with the higher purpose I’m walking in… knowing that God is in control, even when people aren’t.

I’ve also had conversations with other young professionals in the space who feel the same frustration. They’ve told me how they’ve been promised interviews, internships, collaborations, and jobs that never materialized. It’s a tough situation to navigate, and honestly, it can be pretty discouraging.

But if that’s you, I just want to say: Don’t let the broken promises of others cause you to shrink or stop. Let it refine your focus. Let it sharpen your sense of mission. Let it push you to be the kind of person who doesn’t just talk about being a light, but lives it.

You never know who’s watching your consistency.

You never know who you’re inspiring just by doing things the right way.

So keep going.

Keep building.

Keep showing up with excellence, humility, and grit.

The world doesn’t need more noise. It needs more people who mean what they say, and say what they mean.

Be that person. Be a light.
