An Appearance on FOX 5 & Why “Winners Lose More Than Losers Lose”

This past Sunday, I had the honor of joining Tina Cervasio on FOX 5 NY’s Sports Xtra to share my journey in the world of sports media. We talked about how I got started at just 11 years old as a batboy in professional baseball, and how that early start ultimately led to the creation of my Billy the Batboy children’s book series.

From the beginning of the interview, I emphasized something that’s been a cornerstone of my journey: curiosity.

It was my curiosity about baseball—not just as a game, but as a culture, a lifestyle, and a profession—that inspired me to play, to ask questions, to listen, and to work behind the scenes. That same curiosity turned into passion, and that passion became a purpose.

You never know where curiosity will take you. Sometimes it leads to experiments that don’t go anywhere. But other times, it sparks something bigger than you ever imagined. That’s what happened for me.

Later in the segment, Tina asked what I’ve learned through writing and publishing the Billy the Batboy books.

I shared one of my favorite quotes from my former Sports Psychology professor, Dr. Rob Gilbert at Montclair State:

“Winners lose more than losers lose.”

It sounds simple—but it’s profound. Here’s what it means:

Losers often give up after a couple of setbacks. They experience failure and decide it’s not worth the struggle. But winners? They fail too—a lot. The difference is, they keep going. They collect small wins, learn from each loss, and build momentum. The road may be rocky, but over time, they’re the ones who come out ahead.

That lesson has stuck with me through my journey over the last couple years. It’s a reminder that resilience always outlasts talent when talent gives up too soon.

It’s easy—especially as a young athlete or creator—to look around and feel like you’re falling behind. Social media magnifies everyone else’s highlight reel. But progress doesn’t always look like a straight line. Narrow your focus. Keep going.

Remember: Winners lose more than losers lose. Your time will come.
